Why Have We Been Taught to Fear the Sun

4 min read

The sun is the reason nearly all plant and animal life exists on this planet. Cut it off entirely and life as we know it would begin to collapse within weeks. Yet we have been advertised into avoiding it, told to slather on sunscreens and makeup loaded with chemicals that research has linked to metabolic and hormone disruption.

This summer I lost count of how many conversations started the same way. Someone standing in full sun, reapplying sunscreen every hour, convinced that stepping outside without it was practically inviting cancer. That fear was drilled into all of us. But almost nobody I talked to had heard the other half of the research, the part about what is actually driving skin cancer risk from the inside.

The Skin Cancer Risk Hiding In Your Diet

For years the message has been simple. Sun exposure causes skin cancer, so cover up and apply sunscreen. That message leaves out diet.

→  Diets high in omega-6 fat, the kind found in soybean, corn, and sunflower oil, are modestly but consistently linked to higher risk of the two most common skin cancers

→  Animal studies show why. Omega-6 fat promotes UV-induced tumor growth, while omega-3 fat delays it

→  Metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance are linked to higher non-melanoma skin cancer risk

→  Melanoma is more complex. Insulin resistance appears to drive how aggressively it spreads more than whether it develops in the first place

Seed oils, especially the ultra-processed, high omega-6 kind found in packaged and fast food, are increasingly linked to chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, and skin cancer risk itself.

Skin cancer risk is a metabolic issue

The Deficiency Everyone Missed

While the sunscreen aisle got all the attention, another number got ignored entirely.

→  Over 41% of adults are vitamin D deficient, a nutrient tied to bone, immune, thyroid, and mood health

→  That is what happens when a biological necessity gets treated like a threat, while the real metabolic drivers of disease go unaddressed.

What 'Avoid The Sun' Advice Left Out

Doctors have known this for over a century. In 1903, Danish physician Niels Finsen won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for treating disease with concentrated light, and doctors prescribed sunlight as standard care for decades after. Hospitals built sun decks and rolled patients outside daily as part of that care. Antibiotics replaced it, and pharmaceutical treatment became medicine's default model.

Here is what healthy sun exposure still does for your body.

→  Sets your 24-hour circadian rhythm, which governs digestion, hormones, energy, and sleep

→  Releases nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels and helps lower blood pressure

→  Supports mitochondrial ATP production, your cells' main energy source

→  Boosts gut microbiome diversity, according to a clinical pilot study

→  Modulates immune activity, which is why light therapy still treats autoimmune skin conditions

→  Lifts mood through beta-endorphin release

→  Is linked to lower all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in population studies

Sunburn is still the established driver of skin cancer, so protecting your skin matters as much as everything above.

→  Avoid direct sun between about 11am and 2:30pm, adjusting for the season. Stay in the shade whenever you can during this time.

→  Cover up with a hat and long, loose clothing. Cotton and linen are non-toxic choices

→  If you cannot avoid peak sun, on holiday or during a group activity for example, reach for a non-toxic mineral sunscreen instead

→  The most healing sunlight is early morning. It sets your hormones for the rest of the day

The Sunscreen Ingredients Worth Avoiding

These findings come from the FDA's own research.

→  Oxybenzone, octinoxate, and homosalate absorb into the bloodstream after a single application, above the FDA's own safety threshold

→  The FDA still has not classified 12 of the 16 active sunscreen chemicals sold in the US as safe and effective

→  Oxybenzone is linked to hormone disruption and is now banned in Hawaii, Key West, and beyond

Choose mineral formulas instead, like non-nano zinc oxide, which sit on the skin rather than absorbing into it. Check EWG's guide before you buy.

The Reframe

Trade fear for information. Get sun as much as you can, avoid burning, choose your sunscreen carefully, and pay attention to what is happening metabolically. The oil in your pantry matters as much as the lotion in your bathroom. This is what it looks like to rewrite the health story you were handed.

If you're concerned about how certain products or lifestyle habits could be affecting your health, especially when a disease runs in your family, remember this: your genes are the loaded gun, your lifestyle pulls the trigger.
